Lake Sammamish Story Map
The Snoqualmie people have lived in this region for time immemorial. The Lake Sammamish watershed was once part of their traditional territory and provided a place for them to reside year-round. It was a place for trade with other tribes and a source of transportation through a network of waterways. Kokanee were plentiful and a main food source since they lived on the lake year-round.
In modern times, the Snoqualmie people diminished in population and have resided near their keepsake of Snoqualmie Falls. But their presence in the Lake Sammamish watershed has remained an important element of their heritage. As a result, the Snoqualmie Tribe has been instrumental over the years in their effort to improve the environment through habitat restoration and various measures to protect kokanee.
The Snoqualmie Tribe has recently produced a story map which gives a historic overview of the tribe in the region and highlights ongoing efforts to restore the land and to bring their culture and life back to this urban landscape.
