Support Lake Sammamish State Park as an Independent Volunteer

Want to support Lake Sammamish State Park on your own time? Love to garden, but don't have enough space in your own yard?  Looking for ways to help keep our park free and clear of the litter when you visit? FLSSP is excited to offer an independent volunteer opportunity for those who would like to help Lake Sammamish State Park when you have time.

In 2020, FLSSP prioritized the beautification of the landscaping installed at the Sunset Beach playground and esplanade.  We held a number of very successful volunteer events between October 2020 and June 2021 to weed, plant, and mulch all of these gardens, but we didn’t quite finish the job: the final two “bump-out” gardens along the esplanade running from the Sunset Beach Bathhouse to the Issaquah Creek boardwalk still had weeds and needed mulch.

During the busy summer season, it was difficult to schedule weekend volunteer events so FLLSP President Jayme Jonas made occasional visits on quiet weekday mornings to finish the job.  On each visit, visitors would approach her and ask if they could help too so we knew we needed to find a way to get more volunteers out on their own time. FLSSP worked with the incredible Lake Sammamish State Park staff to create a pilot program for individual volunteering.

If you are interested in participating in our individual volunteer opportunity, download this application, complete the missing information, and email a signed copy back to operations@flssp.org. Once your application has been reviewed and approved, we will email back instructions, including weeding locations and guidelines.

There are a number of great benefits of this program to the volunteer and the park. We offer all new volunteers to our independent volunteer program a new set of gardening gloves. You do not need to have a Discover Pass to help us at the park. We offer our volunteers a volunteer day pass. Volunteers who report your hours to FLSSP will get the chance for FLSSP swag and volunteers who log 24 hours of volunteer time can earn a free Discover Pass from State Parks. Your efforts will help free State Park staff time for other critical park needs and it will keep our park beautiful and clean for all visitors to our wonderful urban park.

In 2023, we have had 20 volunteer events, with nearly 300 volunteers, who have completed roughly 500 hours of work at the park.  Join us in 2024 or take part in this individual opportunity to help us make an even bigger impact! Winter doesn't offer a lot of weeding and litter pickup opportunities, but getting your application in now to operations@flssp.org will make it easy for you to get started first thing in the spring when the weeds start popping up.

Can’t wait to see you out at Lake Sammamish State Park!
