Join FLSSP Feb 18th for the Great Backyard Bird Count

Join FLSSP Board Vice President, Robert Ulmer, at Lake Sammamish State Park (LSSP) on Feb 18th from 10 am - noon as he leads the count of our LSSP birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count.

The Great Backyard Bird Count was started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society as a way to collect data on wild birds. It was the first online citizen science project to collect information on birds and to displays those results almost immediately. In 2009 Birds Canada joined the project and in 2013 the Great Backyard Bird Count went global when the project started utilizing eBird.

Anyone can participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. The count happens in three easy steps:

Step 1: The counting team will decide where they will watch birds;

Step 2: They will watch birds for 15 minutes or more sometime during the official count days Feb 16 - 19, 2024 (FLSSP is hosting a bird count on Feb 18th);

Step 3: They try to identify all the birds they see or hear within the planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing their bird sightings:

There is a lot of great information from the official site of the Great Backyard Bird Count if you want to learn more about how to participate and become a citizen scientist in your own backyard (or with FLSSP at LSSP) this February.

Lake Sammamish State Park is an incredible place for bird watching. Its 513+ acres is home to bald eagles, a heron rookery, common mergansers, mallard ducks, pileated woodpeckers and so many more species. Some of the best places to see birds in Lake Sammamish State Park are along the shoreline and the board walk, but there are so many birds to discover while walking the parks trails.

We invite you to come to the park on Feb. 18th to help FLSSP put the birds of LSSP on the Great Backyard Bird Count map!

Register today to join the FLSSP Great Backyard Bird Count at Lake Sammamish State Park.

A Discover pass is required for parking for this event.
